John J. Gumperz
Professor Emeritus of Anthropology, University of California, Berkeley, is one
of the founders of sociolinguistics. The ethnographic approach to language, lan-
guage and social interaction, intercultural communication, contextualization –
these are some of the key terms he introduced. His work is introduced in Lan-

Susanne Günthner
is Professor of German Linguistics at the University of Münster, Germany. Her
research interests include interactional linguistics, syntax in conversation, genre
analysis, intercultural communication, and anthropological linguistics.
Perry Hinton
is a psychologist and Academic Director of the Human Development and Learn-
ing programmes at the Westminster Institute of Education, Oxford Brookes Uni-
versity, Oxford, England. He is interested in the relationship between cognition
and culture. His publications include Stereotypes, Cognition and Culture.
Janet Holmes
is Professor of Linguistics at Victoria University of Wellington, where she
teaches a variety of sociolinguistics courses. She is Director of the Language in
the Workplace Project. Her publications include An Introduction to Sociolin-
guistics, Women, Men and Politeness, Power and Politeness in the Workplace,
and Gendered Talk at Work.
Helga Kotthoff
is Professor at the German Department of University of Education, Freiburg,
Germany. She has published on sociolinguistics, intercultural communication,
German grammar, anthropological linguistics, humour and gender studies. She
teaches in these fields.
Jeffrey LeRoux
received his doctorate in Psychology from UC Berkeley. He taught at Scipps
College, the University of Hawaii at Hilo and San Francisco State University
before becoming president of the Center for Psychological Studies in Berkeley,
California.
David Matsumoto
is Professor of Psychology and Director of the Culture and Emotion Research
Laboratory at San Francisco State University. His main areas of research are in
culture, emotion, and nonverbal behavior.
