Eduardo Neiva is Professor of Communication Studies and Director of
the Center for Communication Research at the University of Alabama-
Birmingham. He has also taught in his native Brazil at the Catholic Uni-
versity of Rio de Janeiro, the Federal University at Fluminense, and the State
University of Rio de Janeiro. He is a former Fulbright scholar at Indiana
University. A specialist in semiotics, he has published Mythologies of Vision:
Image, Culture, and Visuality and numerous books in Portuguese.
Michael Real is Professor and Director of the Scripps School of Journalism at
Ohio University. He is the former Director of the School of Communica-
tion at San Diego State University. His writings on media events, sports,
popular culture, and communication theory have appeared in dozens
of scholarly and general publications. His books include Exploring Media
Culture, Super Media, and Mass-mediated Culture.
Edward C. Stewart is a cultural psychologist living in Silver Springs, Mary-
land. He has taught at Lehigh University and George Washington University,
as well as universities in Japan and Scotland. He is co-author (with Milton J.
Bennett) of American Cultural Patterns, and has published widely in many
journals and in many languages. Lately he has concentrated on cultural
memories of war, and is conducting research on the meaning of pain and the
role of emotion in cultural identity and aggression.
