CHAPTER 3

                                                               Decimals

                                                            48 291
            A decimal number is a fraction in disguise: 0:48 ¼ and 1:291 ¼ 1 or
            1291 100 1000
. The number in front of the decimal point is the whole number (if there
            1000
is one) and the number behind the decimal point is the numerator of a
fraction whose denominator is a power of ten. The denominator will consist
of 1 followed by one or more zeros. The number of zeros is the same as the
number of digits behind the decimal point.
                 2:8 ¼ 2 8 (one decimal place one zero)
                        10
                           7695
0:7695 ¼ (four decimal places four zeros)
                          10,000

                 Practice

Rewrite as a fraction. If the decimal number is more than 1, rewrite the
number both as a mixed number and as an improper fraction.

                 1. 1:71 ¼

                 2. 34:598 ¼

                                                                                          55
