HYDROGEN ECONOMY 265
VANCOUVER FUEL CELL VEHICLE PROGRAM
The Vancouver Fuel Cell Vehicle Program (VFCVP) is a 5-year, $9 million joint initia-
tive between the government of Canada, Ford Motor Company, Technology Early Action
Measures, and the government of British Columbia. This project will demonstrate five
Ballard-powered fuel cell vehicles in real-world conditions on the British Colombian
lower mainland, which will be the first fleet demonstration of fuel cell vehicles in Canada.
Demonstrating third-generation Ford fuel cell vehicles will provide valuable information
on performance and reliability, which can be applied to the evolution of fuel cell vehicles
to the commercial marketplace in the transition to a hydrogen economy. Figure 7.5 shows
a Ballard Engineering stationary fuel cell generator.
Ballard will have its own fuel cell for the duration of the program. Other vehicle
users include the city of Vancouver, the government of British Columbia, Fuel Cells
Canada, and the National Research Council (NRC).
SANTA CLARA VALLEY TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITY
The Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) has contracted with the
Gillig Corporation and Ballard Power Systems of Burnaby, Canada, to build three
