the sample transport efficiency to the plasma and hence increase the sensitivity. The DIN nebulizer
transports close to 100% of the sample to the plasma but it can cope with only very low flow rates of
sample uptake (typically < 100 µl min ). It also suffers the disadvantage of becoming blocked very

easily by particulate matter, or by samples with a high dissolved solid content. Ultrasonic nebulizers are
very expensive and also suffer the drawback of having long 'memory effects'. Various other nebulizer
types also exist, including those that specilize in aspirating samples containing high salt content, e.g.
Babington-type, and the far more exotic types including thermospray and electrospray sample
introduction systems. The nebulizer chosen for an analysis will be governed by the nature of the
sample.
