4.2 FROM MOUSE BRAIN TO HUMAN MIND: PERSONAL VIEWS OF
THE LARGER PICTURE
Even as scientists, committed to the full discipline of third-party science [15] and the
even narrower discipline of precise mathematical modeling [35], we also need to
develop some kind of first-person understanding of mind and life, in order to lead
a balanced, sane and even rational life, respecting values larger than the subgoals
which we pursue when we wear our hats as scientists.
It really is important that we learn to change hats from time to time [39], using
very focused thinking in one area at a time, but also stepping back at times to try to
map out the larger space of possibilities (as does the mouse in Fig. 8.12, but also
using our skills with words and mathematics to support our “inner mouse”).
