occur and that there is no corrosion at the terminals
or in the engine compartment. The Torque Starter
battery delivers as much power in that vital first 5s
of starting as a conventional battery rated 20% more
in cold cranking amps. It is also more rugged than
conventional batteries, despite the fact that it is 25%
              lighter than a conventional battery.
Chloride Automotive Batteries also supply a range
              of standard (non-maintenance-free) commercial vehicle
and van batteries (Tables 50.19 and 50.20) and the
Exide TIR range of maintenance-free commercial
              vehilcle batteries (Table 50.21).
The TIR batteries are available in three different
              starting performances: types 645 and 646 (350A), 643,
              644 and 649 (420A), and 663, 664 and 665 (510A).
TIR batteries are maintenance free. This means
no topping up for life unless equipment malfunction
causes excessive water loss, when the batteries can be
              topped up.
The TIR range of low-maintenance commercial
vehicle batteries features several novel design features
such as straight bar intercell construction and plate
locking devices (Figure 50.7). The straight bar inter-
cell connection minimizes voltage drop and increases
the power available at the starter, meaning quicker Figure 50.7 Design features of Chloride Automotive Batteries
