270 Becoming Metric-Wise
Publications included in the calculation of indicator b and not
included for c are mostly contributions to edited books and separately
published conference proceedings. In the humanities we may encoun-
ter quite some monographs here. For some fields, this group of publi-
cations also includes working papers.
• Total number of received citations (indicator k).
This is the total number of citations received by all publications, as
obtained from the designated database (but published anywhere), and
received during the citation window.
• Total number of received citations by articles published in the desig-
nated database (indicator l).
As the set of articles used is a subset of the set used by indicator (k)
the number of received citations is obviously smaller.
• Percentage of citations received by indicator l (indicator m).
Indicator m is defined as the ratio of indicator l over indicator k. If
this ratio is much smaller than 1 it indicates that “other” publications
receive a fair share of citations and should certainly not be ignored.
• Three indicators that do not take self-citations into account (indicated
0 0
as k ,l ,m ).
0
These indicators are calculated by removing self-citations. Self-
citations can be defined in many ways. Here it is most appropriate to
define self-citations as research group self-citations. This means that if
A and B are members of the same research group and A cites a publi-
cation coauthored by B (even if A is not an author of this publication)
then this counts as a self-citation.
• Percentage self-citations in indicators k and l.
This is especially helpful to detect research groups with an exces-
sive percentage of self-citations.
• A sequence of indicators: total number of received citations for each
publication year separately (sequence s).
Again only citations received during the citation window are taken
into account.
• A sequence similar to sequence s, but now only for articles published
in the designated database (sequence t).
0
0
• Sequences s and t but without self-citations (sequences s and t ).
• The sequence of citations per publications (CpP) (sequences u and u ).
0
The values of sequences s and s divided by the corresponding
0
number of publications (differing by the year).
