                    You Manage Your Career and

                          Don’t Let Others Do It

                 ■ What to do if you don’t get the promotion or move.
                 ■ As you evaluate moves, evaluate bosses.
                 ■ Be the boss of your career.

YOU, NOT YOUR BOSS, HUMAN RESOURCES, A SPONSOR, your parents, or
search firms control and are responsible for your career. The biggest,
costliest, and most avoidable mistake you can make in your life is not
managing your own destiny from the start—and continuing throughout.
This sounds easier said than done, I know. Still, if your lifework
is not determined by you, it will be by someone else—someone who
knows and cares a lot less than you do about your ability, drive, and
             potential.

I always had good options presented to me, yet my biggest regret is
too much going with the flow. I wish I had taken control of my career
                  sooner.
