Put all the points of intelligence together, and set your course.
Don’t call me and offer yourself as the solution to my problems without
knowing the situation.
Be able to give a 30- to 40-second verbal rendition of the void that
needs to be filled, the benefit to the company, and why you’re the person
to do it because of your
1. Background, experience, training, education, and/or achievements
2. Job skills, business acumen, and company and customer
knowledge
3. Competencies and values in managing, communicating to, and
leading others
If you ask for a role change, after you make a case for it, the person
might say, “Okay.” If he or she doesn’t, at least the person knows that you
want it.
I had cases in the basement filled with awards as engineer of the year,
manager of the year, and so on. Even though I had demonstrated per-
formance, I had to ask for a promotion. I gave them two choices so that
I didn’t box them in, but they were unaware I wanted to move up.

Companies do not really have loyalty to employees. They want
employees to be extremely loyal, but you can’t count on the company
to take care of you as an individual. You must constantly be consid-
ering yourself as your own business; promote and take care of your-
self because the company will not.... marry your skill set; don’t
marry your company.

I got the CEO job when I was 8 / months pregnant. The company I
