good for Australia, its economy, or the globe. As with climate change
activists across the world, the battle against truthiness in Australia may be
an uphill one.
NOTES
1. We searched the Capital Monitor database for all references to the
“Carmichael Mine” and the “Adani” corporation, the proposed mine’s
owners, between 01 January 2010 and 31 August 2016. Because the
Galilee Basin, the site of the proposed mine, is in Queensland, we searched
both the Federal and Queensland Parliamentary debates, legislation and
law cases. We found 341 references to “Carmichael” or “Adani” between
those dates in the Federal Parliamentary Hansard search, and 178 refer-
ences in the Queensland state Hansard. References to the mine and the
Indian conglomerate proposing the development were made by members
representing all the major parties (Labor, Liberal, National, Green), during
a time period when government switched from Labor (2010–2013) to a
Liberal-National Coalition (September 2013–present) under four different
prime ministers.
