tions even in a stable shelf environment. Such differentiation and sedimentary
features may occur even where the framework of organisms did not grow far into
wave base or caused surf, but only extended to wave base.
1. Form. Since reef frameworks grow windward while their debris forms tails to leeward,
owing to wave refraction, an asymmetrical form results. A "tail" or double "horn" of reef
debris protrudes leeward. Flank beds not only extend farther away from the reef on this side,
but their slope is less than on the steep windward side.
