Plate XVII. Devonian Stromatoporoid Boundstone
(A) Globular to massive encrusting stromatoporoid Clath'rodictyon interlami-
nated with the dendroid tabulate 1hamnopora (in both upper left and right hand
portion of photograph). The dark band represents a micrite (lime mudstone) layer
which halted framestone growth. Standard microfacies 7, framestone or bindstone
of Embry and Klovan (1971) and facies 8D of Chapter IV. Sample is from a small
bioherm or biostrome in the subsurface Duperow Formation, (lower part of an
upward shoaling cycle) Phillips Petroleum Company Hoehn No.1 well, at 11563
feet, Williams County, North Dakota. Thin section, x 14
(B) Globular, cabbage-head stromatoporoid in wackestone matrix with red
alga (Solenopora) and brachiopod fragments composes standard microfacies 8
and facies 4D of Chapter IV, a normal marine bioclastic wackestone with some
whole fossils. Phillips Petroleum Company, Hoehn No.1 well at 11561 feet, Wil-
liams County, North Dakota. Duperow Formation, (lower part of the typical
cycle). See Fig. X-12 in text. Thin section, x 14
