               Plate XXVIII. Solnhofen Limestone Biota

               (A) Saccocoma (pelagic swimming crinoid) typical of the Jurassic and Cretaceous
open marine basinal limestones, on a block purchased from the Museum Berger
Harthof near Eichstatt, Franconia. Polished slab with affixed acetate, x 2. (Photo-
graph and preparation by F.R.Allcorn, Tenneco, Houston, Texas)

               (B) Solnhofen micrite with tiny echinoderm plate; facies J9 of Chapter IX.
Sample SB is from the Berger Quarry near Eichstatt, Franconia. This remarkably
fine-grained matrix under a scanning electron microscope shows abundant pieces
of coccolithophores as well as tiny 3 to 4 micron rhombs. Thin section, x 90

               (C) Late Jurassic Solnhofen shrimp about natural size from a photograph
purchased from the Museum Berger Harthof near Eichstatt, Franconia, West
German Federal Republic. The remarkably faithful reproduction of the com-
pletely flattened soft-bodied organisms is typical of the famous Solnhofen fauna
