DEDICATION

This book is dedicated to the thousands of men and women who make the global
satellite communications systems of the world possible. These people support
nonstop operation of hundreds of satellites to provide so many vital functions in
virtually every country and territory, on the open seas, and even in outer space.
This process started many years ago with the intellectual giants who conceived of
such a possibility, such as Sir Isaac Newton and Sir Arthur Clarke. This great en-
terprise continues with scientists, engineers, broadcasters, telecommunications
network providers, manufacturers, farmers, financiers, social scientists, doctors,
educators, and the many others who make "live via satellite" a reality 24/7. We
salute them.
