xiv Preface

Thermal medical procedures are proven to have benefits in many severe diseases
and the quest for their development and optimization is of major concern. Heat trans-
fer is the underlying mechanism, and the work to produce it is generally done by
different physics—for instance, electromagnetic fields and ultrasounds. Diffusive-
convective and radiation processes occur, and their knowledge is key to sizing the
applicators, electrodes, and adjusting the medical protocols. Mathematical and numeri-
cal simulation of several thermotherapy methods—radiofrequency, microwave, mag-
netic, ultrasound hyperthermia and ablation, and their numerical solution—are
included. Moreover, the numerical modeling gains in its predictive value when it is
                related to patient-specific computational domains.
