Acknowledgments
In 2002, as editor of Topia: Canadian Journal of Cultural Studies, Professor
Jody Berland of York University invited me to prepare a series of annual
columns on political economy and cultural studies. Five columns appeared
between 2003 and 2006. In a very real sense, the present book began with that
invitation. As editor, Professor Berland touched up the prose of those contri-
butions. All have been revised (and given new titles) for presentation here as
chapters 4 through 8. I gratefully acknowledge permission to republish.
Edward Comor graciously read and commented on an early version of the
manuscript. In addition, he coauthored the original version of chapter 8. Ed-
ward’s wisdom, energy, and generosity are greatly appreciated.
Mike Babe graciously consented to be my copy editor; his diligence and
stellar performance are most respected.
Sandra Braman, Kostas Gouliamos, and James Winter read and com-
mented on portions of the present manuscript. All have been pillars of support
over the years. Forty years ago Warren J. Samuels opened the field of intel-
lectual history to me, and he has been an inspiration ever since.
