About the Author
Robert E. Babe is professor of media studies at the University of Western
Ontario, where he was the holder of the Jean Monty/BCE Chair in Media
Studies. He received his Ph.D. in economics from Michigan State University
in 1972. He has taught at several universities. He is author, coauthor, or edi-
tor of many articles, book chapters, technical reports, and books, including
Telecommunications in Canada: Technology, Industry and Government
(1990), Communication and the Transformation of Economics (1995), Cana-
dian Communication Thought: Ten Foundational Writers (2000), Culture of
Ecology: Reconciling Economics and Environment (2006), and Media, Struc-
tures and Power: The Robert E. Babe Collection (2009). He is recipient of the
prestigious OCUFA award for excellence in university teaching. He has been
consultant and expert witness before several regulatory tribunals. When not
writing, Robert Babe may be found exploring back roads of southwestern On-
tario on his motorcycle or enjoying the aquatic of life of Pigeon Lake near
Bobcaygeon.
