In her External Measures Series, interactive artist Camille
Utterback’s goal is to “create an aesthetic system which responds fluidly and

intriguingly to physical movement in the exhibit space.” Untitled 5 uses
body tracking and custom software, in order to turn the body into a painterly
tool for an ever-changing visual feedback system. (See Figure 2)
The existence, positions, and behaviors [sic] of various
parts of the projected image depend entirely on people’s
presence and movement in the exhibit area…. Out of a
working ‘palette’ of these animated marks, she composes
an overall composition… Integral to the piece are the
animated mark’s cumulative interaction with each other
over time… Engaging with this work creates a visceral
sense of unfolding… is the experience of embodied
