Federation affects the character and operation of the DG program. Note in Figure 3-2, we show
a heat map where similar data assets can be tightly governed (in the center or hot zone), or more
loosely governed (on the fringe or the cool zone). The solid areas indicate a governed area called
“item,” where there is tight control of global items, slightly looser control on regional items, and local
items are barely governed. The dotted areas point to another subject, “customer.” There is still the tight
control for centrally used customer content, but the regional and local are treated the same. So, the
federated intensity of DG differs by content type.
