Lightheartedness, laughter, and a playful spirit activate
the right side of the brain. This zone lights up when we’re
experiencing good feelings; when we’re happy, optimistic,
and positive toward others.
The therapeutic benefits of humor also extend into the
realm of physical health. Laughter decreases harmful stress
hormones and boosts the immune system. It brings aerobic
benefits to the body and even carries analgesic properties,
which means that humor truly is a painkiller!
The advantages of humor are particularly evident in our
professional lives. In a recent Harvard Business Review
article, Fabio Sala writes:
“More than four decades of study by various
researchers confirm some common-sense wisdom:
Humor, used skillfully, greases the management
wheels. It reduces hostility, deflects criticism, relieves
tension, improves morale, and helps communicate
difficult messages.” 17
