had such a desire not been felt in the first place. The currently operative, push-button
people meters are, from this perspective, only partial materializations of this desire. The
vision of the perfect, passive, people meter measurement device may sound extravagant,
but such an instrument is the ultimate dream of an industry continually in search of the
perfectly streamlined ‘television audience’.
