12 While Singapore and Hong Kong still hold the top spots, Dubai is
catching up fast—Dubai’s container flow was less than a quarter of
Singapore’s in 2001, but grew to a third as large by 2005.
As Dubai’s ports have grown in volume and sophistication,
the expertise of the firm managing them has become increasingly
competitive. It is not surprising, then, that one of the companies
with GCC origins that has been most successful in competing
worldwide is Dubai Ports World. Through organic growth and
acquisitions, the company’s operations now span five continents
and would have included the United States if not for congressional
intervention.
Dubai Ports World: Exporting Operational Excellence
The firm known as Dubai Ports World (DPW) was formed in
2005 through a merger of the Dubai Ports Authority (DPA), which
managed the ports of the emirate, with Dubai Ports International
