The sodium fast reactor (SFR) is a fast breeder reactor (FBR) that uses liquid
sodium as the coolant. Both experimental and commercial sodium-cooled fast
breeder reactors have been designed, built, and operated. EBR-1, EBR-2 and Fermi
operated in the U.S., and Phenix and SuperPhenix reactors operated in France. Russia
operates two commercial SFRs—BN-600 and BN-800. A 500MWe Indian prototype
fast breeder reactor (PFBR) was developed by the Indira Gandhi Center for Atomic
Research. A 600MWe Chinese SFR (CFR-600) was developed by the China Institute
of Atomic Energy.
