INCOMPLETE COMBUSTION Combustion that occurs in such a
way that fuel is not completely oxidized.
INERT A substance that is chemically inactive.
INORGANIC Relating to or obtained from nonliving things.
ION An atom or molecule with an electrical charge, either
positive or negative.
IONIC BOND A force that attracts and holds positive and
negative ions together.
IONIC COMPOUND A compound that is composed of positive
and negative ions, so that the total charge of the positive
ions is balanced by the total charge of the negative ions.
ISOMER Two or more forms of a chemical compound with the
same molecular formula, but different structural formu-
las and different chemical and physical properties.
ISOTOPE A form of an element with the usual number of
protons in the nucleus but more or less than the usual
number of electrons.
