Everything I Know About Business I Learned at McDonald’s
edge that there are times when it would be easy to look the other
way, but somehow the culture taught us not to shirk challenges.
While risk taking was encouraged, we were also expected to
have our facts and numbers straight so that we stood on solid
ground while venturing forward. Those with courage were
respected, and their opinions were sought after. Organizations
that foster courage, tempered with facts, stand to gain big wins.
Key Learnings
✔ Walk away from those deals you know in your gut are not
right for your organization—no matter how much money is at
stake. Be true to your principles.
✔ Encourage risk taking. In all likelihood, you won’t achieve any-
thing by playing it safe all of the time. But make it an edu-
cated, well-thought-out risk.

✔ Push for what is right—even if you’re upsetting the status
quo.
✔ Take on the challenges rather than pretending they don’t
exist. Courage is demonstrated through repetition in navigat-
ing tough challenges as they arise again and again.
✔ Speak your mind, respectfully. Others will appreciate you
telling it like it is, and hopefully it will encourage others to
speak up, too.
