In interviewing numerous individuals for this book, I was
amazed and surprised at the amount of conversation that the issue
of “talking to each other” came up in discussion, even though
years had passed with many of their careers. In some cases, it was
painfully clear that there were unresolved feelings. I believe much
of these feelings could have been avoided with more frank, hon-
est communication at all levels and at numerous times.

How can organizations make performance reviews more
effective?
Performance appraisals and other similar processes are
a great opportunity to communicate and encourage

engagement.
Unfortunately, many of the organizations I have worked
with in my consulting practice seem to miss out on this
kind of opportunity. Instead, they find performance
reviews an arduous task—an unpleasant exchange for both
the supervisor and the employee. How can you turn a per-
formance appraisal into a more rewarding experience?
• Ask employees to come to the meeting prepared
with their notes of appraisal comments from the
previous review, as well as a list of accomplish-
ments or activities that they felt good about dur-
ing the previous review period.
• Deliver your review verbally, referring to notes, if
necessary. However, don’t just pull out a completed
