Perhaps you found even three or more callings that apply to
you. That’s fine. You may be a multiply gifted person. We’ll discov-
er some guideposts in the next section that will point the way to
your particular path.
Applying Your Gifts in the Real World
If you have an authentic calling for being persuasive, for example,
it is doubtful that someone will pay you simply for that raw talent.
Your calling must somehow be put in context by becoming part of
the world in which people are paid to perform meaningful jobs.
Being persuasive, for example, might be translated into the world
of work as a specific job title that is generally recognized and that
people receive monetary compensation for. Some jobs that match
well with the calling of being persuasive are teacher, minister, attor-
ney, salesperson, and actor.
In the next exercise you’ll be scanning through a
list of job titles and asking yourself the question,
“How well would this job title allow me to
express my authentic calling?”
With this exercise, it’s important to really let your imagination
and intuition flow freely. It may even mean that you suspend, for a
while, your normal, rational, critical mind in order to give other,
deeper, and perhaps wiser, parts of your being a chance to bring
forth messages you may not have considered before. Some people
call this frame of mind “thinking out of the box,” and others, “emo-
tional intelligence.” Let your mind and feelings be as flexible as
possible. Too often our critical minds are the culprits that landed
us in jobs we found to be unfulfilling. Now is your chance to let
what I call your “deeper mind” choose for you!
