knowledge in the past few decades. The authors realise that their first attempt
to generalise the accumulated experience in any systematic way can hardly be
expected to end up in anything comprehensive and faultless. In addition, provid-
ing a comprehensive list of references was not an easy task. Also, when a project
involves international teams of researchers—as is always the case with engi-
neering nowadays—the historical and priority accents often become blurred.
All that is left to hope for is the understanding of the hundreds of individual and
team authors of physical/engineering ideas and technological solutions, whose
names are omitted in this book.
