                                                  clinical requirements (to identify/prevent/
manage acute hyper- and hypoglycemia) and
provider requirements for data on glycaemic
patterns and to monitor the impact of
                                                  therapeutic decision-making.
                                                • The purpose(s) of performing SMBG and using
SMBG data should be agreed between the
person with diabetes and the healthcare
                                                  provider. These agreed-upon purposes/goals
and actual review of SMBG data should be
                                                  documented.
                                                • SMBG use requires an easy procedure for
patients to regularly monitor the performance
and accuracy of their glucose meter

for adults with type 2 diabetes.
                                                • Do not routinely offer self-monitoring of blood
glucose levels for adults with type 2 diabetes
                                                  unless:
o the person is on insulin or
o there is evidence of hypoglycemic episodes
                                                    or
o the person is on oral medication that may
increase their risk of hypoglycemia while
                                                    driving or operating machinery or
o the person is pregnant, or is planning to
                                                    become pregnant.
                                                • Consider short-term self-monitoring of blood
glucose levels in adults with type 2 diabetes
                                                  (and review treatment as necessary):
o when starting treatment with oral or
                                                    intravenous corticosteroids or
                                                  o to confirm suspected hypoglycemia.
                                                • Be aware that adults with type 2 diabetes who
have acute intercurrent illness are at risk of
                                                  worsening hyperglycemia. Review treatment as
                                                  necessary.

monitoring their blood glucose levels, conduct
a structured assessment at least annually. The
                                                  assessment should include the following:
                                                  o the person’s self-monitoring skills
o the quality and frequency of testing
                                                                              Continued
