204 DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
Figure 11.1 The public viewing window and computerized data display of the
enthalpy energy recovery wheel earned the Newark Center for Health Sciences
and Technology at Ohlone College an “innovation” point in the public education
category, which contributed to its LEED-NC Platinum certification. Photo courtesy of

Site Design Questions
During design development, we need to complete our site design and to ensure that we
are maximizing opportunities for installing sustainability features through the project site.
1 Does the internal circulation of the project site support pedestrian and bike access?
Have we designed separate entrances for bicycles, with power-assisted doors?
2 Are there adequate places for bicycle storage in the building? What about a loca-
tion for an air compressor?
3 Are there showers located for easy access to bicycle entrance and storage?
4 If there is asphalt paving already on this site that will be removed, can it be reused
for future paving?
5 Are stairwells and ramps centrally located, highly visible and easy to use, so that
building users who choose not to use an elevator may easily move from one floor
to another?
6 What is the light (pollution) impact of the building at night? Have we modeled the
footcandle (fc) levels so that we know we can meet the IESNA 2004 (or current)
site lighting standards in LEED?
