of innumerable colleagues have helped to shape the perspectives
        articulated in this work.
The publishing and editorial team at McGraw-Hill has been a
true partner in this project. Senior editor Leah Spiro has been an
understanding and supportive colleague, as has editorial director
Mary Glenn. Leah and Mary are to be commended for their strong
transition in taking over from Jeanne Glasser and Herb Schaffner,
their respective predecessors, who warmly launched this project. I am
grateful to Janice Race, Tania Loghmani, Jane Palmieri, and other col-
leagues at McGraw-Hill for their stellar contributions to the manu-
script. I take responsibility for any errors or shortcomings in the man-
uscript, and I thank all who have contributed to its preparation.
Despite their increased importance for global markets, Gulf capital
and Islamic finance remain unfamiliar to many senior executives and
financiers. A deeper understanding of these phenomena can, I believe,
help foster the trade flows, investment ties, and commercial relation-
ships that are the cement of mutual respect and harmony. It is my hope
that this book may be a modest contribution toward that end.
