The binding mechanisms in MOC pastes are not completely under-
stood. The compositions of the gel formed and crystals of ternary oxychlo-
ride phases are uncertain. The relatively large contact areas between
particles of MgO manifesting the inherent binding force are attributed to
highly dispersive action occurring in the MOC system. Matkovic and

Young attribute the initial stiffening to the rapid growth of crystals into
interstitial space between MgO grains and interlocking with the particles.
The correspondence between strength and density is attributed to crystal
intergrowth.
