Acknowledgments
This book is based on a Ph.D. thesis elaborated at the Chemical Engineering Depart-
ment of the Universitat Rovira i Virgili by Guido Sonnemann with the supervision
of Francesc Castells and Marta Schuhmacher. The entire Environmental Manage-
ment and Analysis Group AGA proved to be an excellent group with which to
socialize, as well as a rich intellectual stimulus. In particular we would like to
mention Ralph Harthan, Israel Herrera, Luiz Kulay, Montse Meneses, Yolanda Pla,
Julio Rodrigo, and Haydée Yrigoyen who provided valuable contributions to Chapter
4, Chapter 5, Chapter 7 and Chapter 8 of this book. Andreas Ciroth (GreenDeltaTC,
Berlin) and Marcel Hagelüken shared with us the modular model for municipal solid
waste incinerators. Juan Carlos Alonso and Christoph Schäfer prepared and reviewed
the life-cycle assessment study of the SIRUSA waste incinerator. The ideas of Karl-
Michael Nigge (Simon–Kucher & Partners, Bonn) were essential in the development
of site-dependent impact assessment factors in Chapter 7. Many thanks to all!
A special thank-you goes to Margarita Rodriguez, who edited our English, and
to Samuel Sanz, who assisted us in the technical editing of the book. Furthermore,
at the Chemical Engineering School, our special gratitude goes to Josep Maria Mateo
for resolving several doubts in statistics and to Miguel Angel Santos for doing the
same in mathematics.
We wish to thank to Ramon Nadal (SIRUSA) for the data from the municipal
solid waste incinerator (MSWI) of Tarragona, Spain, and the interest in the appli-
cation of environmental assessment methods to the plant. We would like to express
our gratitude to the Meteorological Service of Catalonia (SMC), especially to Jordi
Cunillera, for providing the meteorological data fundamental for the development
of the study. We would also like to thank Wolfram Krewitt (University of Stuttgart)
for his assistance in the application of the EcoSense software.
Special gratitude goes to Robert Ackermann (TU Berlin), who followed the
elaboration of this work with a lot of interest and made several helpful suggestions,
and to our families for all their patience and support during the years of work in
preparing this book.
We specially acknowledge the financial support provided by SIRUSA (Municipal
Waste Incinerator Plant) and the General Directorate of Environmental Quality
(Environmental Ministry of Catalonia, Spain), without it the transformation of the
Ph.D. thesis into this text book would not have been possible.
