                   SELECTING, BUILDING, AND

               DEVELOPING YOUR WORK TEAM

Even the best strategies can have a short half-life. If you
are going to bet on anything, bet on the best people.

I’m not looking for the best players. I’m looking for the
                   right players.

Some of the most important decisions that you will make during your
first year will be in selecting your leadership team. You then need to
decide how to build teamwork, making sure your team and organiza-
tion are effectively trained and developed. You will need to accomplish
           the following:

            ■ Skillfully use a selection process and make good choices in estab-
              lishing your work team.
            ■ Make careful, sensitive, and sometimes difficult decisions about
people in order to continuously raise the bar on your leadership
              and professional talent.
            ■ Decide if certain people must be redeployed or terminated.
            ■ Implement a strong team-building process.
            ■ Train, coach, and develop your people.

In this chapter, there is useful information about the following:

            ■ A conceptual model for selecting your leadership team
            ■ Deciding whether to keep everyone
