SETTLING INTO YOUR RENEWING
ORGANIZATION
Nothing is as temporary as that which is called “permanent.”
—Anonymous
By about the ninth month of your new leadership role, you should be
able to begin helping your organization settle into a much higher level of
performance compared to when you started. Also, throughout your first
year, there are very important parts of your life outside of work that will
frequently be stressed because of the time and effort that you are devot-
ing to your new role. You will need to accomplish the following:
■ Achieve a new, higher, more productive organizational “steady
state” as you approach the end of your first year.
■ Evaluate how you are doing and whether you actually like the new
role you started less than a year ago.
■ Step back and assess how you are working with your boss and
other key stakeholders. Are you helping your boss, and is your
boss helping you?
■ Understand how you can manage the new responsibilities of your
work life and personal life so that they effectively complement
each other.
