Writing a book is a long journey, especially when writing the first one. My wife,
Swati, was instrumental in getting this book to the finish line. She provided con-
stant support, encouragement, tasty snacks, and energy drinks while I was
absorbed in writing the book. I thank my loving family members, Mom,
Dad, Samarth, Dr. Ganesh, and Ms. Swagatika, who gave me good company
and checked on the status of the book as they cheered from the sidelines. Friends
in Texas, Oklahoma, Colorado, California, Washington, and India took away
the stress of writing the book through their humor, love, and all the exciting
activities we did together over the last 1 year. Special thanks to the professors
in Texas A&M, University of Oklahoma, and University of Texas, who put
aside their Football rivalries to provide me much-needed guidance to create
a great book that can stand the test of time.
I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Carlos Torres-Verdin,
my Ph.D. advisor, who introduced me to the world of research and taught me
to strive for perfection. I am also grateful to Dr. Chandra Rai and Dr. Carl Son-
dergeld, who are legends in petrophysics and rock physics. When I embarked
on a career in academia as an assistant professor, Dr. Rai and Dr. Sondergeld
supported me to grow as an independent researcher and demystified industry-
academia collaboration.
I thank Katie Hammon from Elsevier for trusting a new author like me and
for giving me the opportunity to write my first book. Katie ensured that the book
that I had in my mind got all the support from Elsevier so that it can be translated
to reality. A big thanks to Selvaraj Raviraj and Aleksandra Packowska from
Elsevier, who ensured a timely completion at the highest quality.
A special thanks to all the students and researchers that I have worked with
so far over the last 4 years. All of you motivate me to be better at what I do and to
create new knowledge that can be published as books and journal papers.
