164 CHAPTER 14 Offshore Lighting
ROUTINE MAINTENANCE
The importance of regular maintenance and testing of all offshore lighting equipment
cannot be overstressed. Maintenance scheduling software is essential for ensuring
that equipment is not an ignition hazard, or otherwise unsafe. Such software can also
provide evidence to external surveyors and inspectors that adequate maintenance
is being carried out, and can be linked to DCR Performance standards (see Part 9
Chapters 1 and 2).
IEC 60079: Part 17 provides guidance on inspection and this should be adhered
to. Inspection intervals should be monitored and adjusted to suit the level of weather
exposure and degree of deterioration found after each interval. Escape lighting
should be regularly tested, and intervals between testing reduced if more than one or
two luminaires are found to have failed in any one area. Escape lighting will receive
particular attention during ICP and HSE surveys.
