Preface

        SCOPE FOR THIS EDITION

In addition to the comprehensive coverage of material requirements planning (MRP), this
third edition will focus on the current state of the MRP application as well as identify the
fundamental changes required to achieve sustainable success given the current global cir-
cumstances and technology options. While capacity requirements planning (CRP) is an
integral part of the modern planning process, the scope of this book is limited primarily
to materials and inventory only. This book is intended not only to describe current prac-
tice but also to articulate the next generation of MRP logic—demand-driven MRP
        (DDMRP).

        ABOUT THE COLLABORATION

The authors did not set out to write this book. Each was doing work in his or her respec-
tive areas and from time to time crossed paths. Chad Smith had been working primarily
with midrange manufacturing companies. His firm, Constraints Management Group
(CMG), saw the market opportunity for software to support the pull concepts of drum-
buffer-rope (DBR) and created a product called DBR+™. CMG implemented the product
in various small and midrange manufacturers. In 2005, CMG developed a product named
                        ®
Replenishment+ . By 2007, it was clear that the future of the company was this new prod-
uct and its innovative approach to planning material. In 2008, Chad decided to take the
product and some conceptual PowerPoints to an old friend named Carol Ptak because
they both live in the Seattle area. Carol was the former president and CEO of the
American Production and Inventory Control Society (APICS) and also was vice president
and global industry executive for the manufacturing and distribution industries at
PeopleSoft before acquisition by Oracle. Carol was invited to be executive in residence at
Pacific Lutheran University after that acquisition. Carol immediately saw that the prod-
