Sedimentary basins therefore record not only the nature of the physio-
graphic basin where they occur, but also the nature of the margins of the
physiographic basin, and the changes of these with time. Stratigraphy and
structure, on both small and large scales, are intimately related. Transgres-
sive sequences are, typically either not deformed, or deformed only by fault-
ing. Regressive sequences are typically both folded and faulted. The nature
of these faults and folds is central to our understanding of petroleum geol-
ogy, sedimentary basins, and, indeed, geology in general.
