        :   MARIA—ALL JOBS ARE REALLY THE SAME, RIGHT?


        For most of Maria’s life, a job was a job was a job.
           It was a paycheck—never enough, but enough to get by. Jobs in
        her chosen profession of hotel customer service were simply a means
        to an end, helping Maria and her husband put food on the table, keep
        one step ahead of the mortgage company, and put a little away for
        retirement.
           Friends and coworkers often told Maria “she had a gift” for mak-
        ing people feel welcome. The best parties were always at Maria’s
        house—a fun theme, goofy games—everyone looked forward to an
        evening at her place. Hotel guests frequently commented on the little
