           4. To evaluate evidence  found  in order  to detect  causes  of abnormally
              short  life,  for  example,  faulty  lubrication  conditions  resulting  in
              rapid  bearing  degradation, or  excessive  misalignment leading  to
              component wear.
           5. To evaluate  data  to  determine  inspection  intervals,  routines,  and
              techniques.

           Note: One of the objectives of preventive maintenance is to avoid  per-
         forming  unnecessary maintenance and  unnecessary costs.  Evaluating
         inspection  data helps achieve this  objective.

         MAINTENANCE    COSTS


           Perhaps  the  most  frequent  problem  maintenance departments  face  is
         rising cost and diminishing resources. While being constantly confronted
