Acknowledgments
No book is a solo effort. This book would not have been possible without the
help of several key individuals who contributed to the process of researching
and writing Silicon Dragon—and without good friends who provided moral
support.
My editor at McGraw-Hill, Leah Spiro, has been a constant cheerleader,
starting two years ago when we began to discuss the idea for this book. Leah,
you know I couldn’t have done this without you! Your guidance has been
invaluable.
Dan Schwartz provided the entrepreneurial environment that was central
to developing this book. Dan, I appreciate your understanding, and the
support of the entire publishing group at Asian Venture Capital Journal—
in Hong Kong (Allen, Harmony, Paul, Vincent), Beijing (Ying) and London,
home to AVCJ’s new parent company, Incisive Media (Jonathon, James). And
I mustn’t slight my colleagues at Qiosk on Manhattan’s W. 35th St., (Pat,
Scott, Rebecca and Louis), who have been great office mates.
My career as a journalist and now, as a first-time book author, would
never have progressed without a grounding at Ohio University and the en-
couragement of editors I have had the privilege of working with: Bill Holstein,
who was my editor at Chief Executive magazine; Jan Alexander, the features
editor at Worth magazine; Ed Paisley, the former managing editor at The
Deal, Alain Sherter, editor of Tech Confidential, Laurel Wentz of Ad Age, and
Rick Schine, senior editor, Inc. magazine. I’d also like to thank my former
editors at Red Herring—Jason Pontin, Rafe Needleman and Michael
Fitzgerald—for sending me out of the office and overseas in search of venture
stories not yet reported. David Moore, I will always fondly remember the
years I worked with you in the early 1990s at International Business maga-
zine. You first sent me to Hong Kong in 1992 on a reporting trip, and I
haven’t stopped going to Asia since then!
This book would never have seen a beginning without the coaching and
insights of several crucial sources: David Chao, Jim Breyer, Jenny Lee, Lip-Bu
Tan, Ta-lin Hsu, Peter Mok, Henry Wong, Kyung Yoon, Tina Ju, Jixun Foo,
Richard Lim, Sonny Wu, Kevin Fong, Bill Tai, Len Baker, Eric Li, Joel
Kellman, Hugo Shong, Tim Draper, and Gary Rieschel. These venture capi-
talists, among others, helped to introduce me to the tech revolution that is
unfolding in China.
