During the Prepare phase, new hires receive pre-Day One support to
establish personal connections with co-workers, complete administrative
paperwork and self-educate on their new role. By front-loading many of
the administrative tasks before Day One, program designers can use what
used to be the orientation period as an opportunity to dig in and engage
new hires with exciting content, such as strategic perspective on the mis-
sion at hand, information about the company culture, and directed inter-
actions to begin establishing a personal network.
During the Integrate and Excel phases, new hires receive regular men-
toring support, feedback from hiring managers and cohorts, socialization
opportunities, strategic education, and career planning advice. This design
aims to provide consistent, continuous guidance on the activities and
developmental areas most relevant to the new hire at key points through-
out the year. These areas and the program’s focus shift over time, as rep-
resented in the preceding graphic (Figure 2.6). New hires should feel as
