                    K. Suzanne Barber is director of the Center for Excellence in Distributed Global Environments
(EDGE), a cross-disciplinary center where departments throughout the University of Texas are
working together to revolutionize how distributed engineering teams, distributed computation, and
distributed information exchange ensure the effective and efficient use, delivery, and security of
software systems. As director of the Laboratory for Intelligent Processes and Systems, she pursues
her personal research interests with her students addressing (1) in-depth, iterative, and coordinated
design and analysis of software systems among distributed teams, as well as (2) information as-
surance and coordination for distributed agent-based software systems. She has published over
300 articles in refereed conference proceedings, journals, and book chapters, and holds copyrights
for innovative software engineering analysis and design environment. As director of Software
Engineering academic programs at the University of Texas, she leads educational initiatives for
undergraduates, full-time graduate students, and working professionals.

Nicholas Berente is a research fellow at the University of Michigan’s School of Information. His
research focuses on complex design processes and the role of information systems in supporting
innovation. He has a bachelor’s degree in finance from John Carroll University and an M.B.A. and
Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University. He is the founder and former president of Pentagon
Engineering Corporation, a nationwide systems integrator that specialized in the information
systems that support product development, which he sold in 2002.

Roger H.L. Chiang is associate professor of information systems at the College of Business,
University of Cincinnati. He received his B.S. degree in management science from National Chiao
Tung University, Taiwan; M.S. degrees in computer science from Michigan State University and
in business administration from the University of Rochester; and Ph.D. degree in computers and
information systems from the University of Rochester. His research interests are in data and knowl-
edge management and intelligent systems, particularly in database reverse engineering, database
integration, data and text mining, document classification and clustering, domain knowledge
discovery, and semantic information retrieval. He is currently senior editor of the DATA BASE
for Advances in Information Systems, and associate editor of Journal of Database Management,
International Journal of Intelligent Systems in Accounting, Finance and Management, and MIS
Quarterly. His research has been published in a number of journals including ACM Transactions
on Database Systems, Communications of the ACM, DATA BASE for Advances in Information
Systems, Data & Knowledge Engineering, Decision Support Systems, Journal of American Society
for Information Science and Technology, Journal of Database Administration, Journal of Manage-
ment Information Systems, and Very Large Data Base Journal.
