chromatograph was connected to a Hewlett-Packard 5989 mass spectrometer with a heated interface.
The mass spectrometer was operated in the negative ion chemical ionization mode and the total ion
chromatogram obtained from a sample of spiked urine is shown in figure 5.20

It is seen that the procedure is protracted and complex but the peaks shown in figure 5.20 represent
0.095 and 0.24 ng of the 4,4'-methylenebis(2-chloroaniline) derivative and the standard respectively. It
is also seen that the signal to noise ratio is at least an order of magnitude which means that a mass of 10
pg would probably be detectable. The amount of effort put into developing this particular analysis
indicates the range of different sample preparation procedures that can be used in GC/MS and,
incidentally, the importance of determining the amount of 4,4'-methylenebis(2-chloroaniline) in urine.
