230 SENSITIVITY TO INITIAL CONDITIONS
In a similar way, measuring total reaction over a large boundary area is likely to produce
a deterministic result.
In summary, whenever experimental or numerical investigation into the behaviour of
the combined finite-discrete element system is undertaken, due attention has to be given
to the phenomena of sensitivity to initial conditions. However, this is not to say that these
sensitivities should be an excuse for inconsistencies in the applied model, or errors in the
implementation of a particular model.
