for accepting used motor oil for recycle at no charge. This helps reduce the potential for
people to put used motor oil on the ground or into stormwater devices and lessens the
chance for oil pollution downstream of a site. Another example of a practice is a change
in fertilizer schedules based on weather patterns so that excess fertilizer does not get
carried off-site during a storm. A nonstructural practice common in the Bay Area of
California is to label stormwater inlets with pictures of fish to warn people that the inlet
collects runoff that discharges into the Bay and anything put into the inlet might harm
life in the Bay. Table 10.1.1 lists some categorizations of BMPs by form.
Finally, BMPs can be broadly categorized by function. However, there are many
different ways that BMPs are organized by function. Sometimes BMPs are segregated as
quality or quantity control measures. Sometimes they are separated into groupings
based on whether they control erosion or control sedimentation. When they are
categorized by the latter, they are typically referred to as erosion and sedimentation control
(ESC) measures. Figure 10.1.3 gives some different categorizations by function.
Specific structural BMPs are listed under various names and functions that have
been adopted regionally or locally or by various types of practitioners. Since they are too
numerous to list or organize, an attempt will be made in the following sections to give a
few examples of BMP terminology and categorization. These examples come from
entities such as a watershed-related agency in the Chesapeake Bay area, a southeastern
state department of transportation (DOT) as related to ESC, and research into BMPs by
the Transportation Research Board (TRB) National Cooperative Highway Research
