EXISTING BUILDINGS 193
LOOKING TO THE FUTURE
The Crestwood Building’s LEED for Existing Buildings certification will be up for
renewal in 2012. In addition to maintaining the standards we have set and recording
information about the materials usage, processes, and procedures we have in place,
we are always on the lookout for small improvements and adjustments to our day-to-
day routines that can save energy, reduce waste, and improve tenant comfort, satis-
faction, and retention. We constantly ask ourselves, “What can we do better?” That’s
our policy.
We have a five-year plan for projected improvements that includes some big-ticket
items, like the overhaul of our elevator system (we’ve hired an outside consultant to
help us with this) and adding greater shade canopy in our parking lot. Our first consid-
eration is energy efficiency. At some point, we will need to replace our aging HVAC
system, which is nearing the end of its useful life. At this time, our efforts at conscien-
tious maintenance have allowed us to defer replacement. Being resource-efficient
means replacing things when they need replacing, rather than simply replacing them to
have something different.
