BECOMING A PLAYER 9
One reason the moment was so extraordinary is that it was so
unusual: Jobs is an exception to the rule. For every Jobs, there are a
thousand others who have no idea how to capitalize on their own
potentials.
SUPERCOMPETENCE
Jobs and a few other business superstars have what I call supercom-
petence, which manifests in the three Cs:
1. Competence. Are you good at what you do?
2. Clarity. Can you see beyond the job? Can you see the road
ahead?
3. Communication. This is the most critical. Can you connect with
important audiences? Can you go the next step and make
dreams reality? Can you make things happen?
Competence and clarity by themselves have never led to super-
stardom in business or even to excellence. For that, you need the
third leg of the stool, communication. But it is painfully self-evident
that wherever you look today, this vital component is missing. In
fact, the communications skills of an alarming number of business
leaders is downright lamentable. And that sorry situation permeates
right down through the ranks. The problem is so widespread and
runs so deep that it can begin even before the bright-eyed graduates
Jobs was talking to walk through the doors to their first job
interviews.
